SELDEN, NY — A
Following an investigation by 6th Squad detectives in Selden, Aqueel Ahmad, 53, of Selden, was charged with second-degree unlawful surveillance in connection with trying to photograph a 17-year-old girl under her shorts at ShopRite back on Sept. 11, Suffolk police said.
He will be held overnight at the precinct for arraignment Friday at First District Court in Central Islip.
Ahmad's court information was not immediately available.
His defense attorney, David Kirsch, told
Ahmad was a special education aide at the Brookhaven Learning Center in Bellport, which is part of Eastern Suffolk BOCES, until he resigned from his post, an institution spokesman told Patch Friday morning.
He declined further comment.
In a statement, which was released after Ahmad's initial arrest, David Wicks, the institution's Chief Operating Officer, said officials were aware of the allegations.
"We condemn the abhorrent crimes of which he is accused," he said. "Mr. Ahmad was not on campus today, has been placed on leave, is prohibited from all BOCES property, and has had no contact with students since his arrest."
Ahmad was arrested in October after 13-year-old girl was in an aisle of the store browsing at greeting cards, and he bent down and used his cell phone to take pictures under her dress, police said. The girl's father saw what he did and approached Ahmad, who immediately fled on foot, and the father told officers what happened, according to police.
Ahmad was arrested in his car at the intersection of College Road and Galaxie Lane in Selden on Oct. 28 at around 6:40 p.m. and was also charged with second-degree unlawful surveillance in the case, as well as endangering the welfare of a child.
Police are asking anyone with additional information, or who feels they may have been victimized by Aqeel, is asked to contact the 6th Squad at 631-854-8652.
This is a breaking story and will be updated.
