ONTARIO, CA — After pulling a vehicle over in an Inland Empire neighborhood, federal immigration officers shot a man who they say tried to interrupt the stop and ram them by reversing his car toward the officers.
Around 6:30 a.m. on Oct. 30, ICE officers were conducting a vehicle stop at the 2800 block of Vineyard Ave. in Ontario, Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told Patch.
During the stop, McLaughlin said a separate driver in another car — who was "not the target" — pulled in front of officers in a vehicle. Officers ordered the driver to leave the scene, McLaughlin said.
As the driver started to pull away, "the car stopped and attempted to run officers over by reversing directly at them without stopping," McLaughlin added.
An ICE officer then fired shots at the vehicle as the driver abandoned his vehicle and fled the scene.
The driver was identified as Carlos Jimenez, who is a U.S. citizen, McLaughlin said.
Jimenez sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and was discharged from Riverside Community Hospital after he was treated for his injury, according to McLaughlin.
He was then arrested by Homeland Security and booked into the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on charges of assaulting, resisting or impeding.
"This is another example of the threats our ICE officers are facing day-in and day-out as they risk their lives to enforce the law and arrest criminals," McLaughlin wrote in an email to Patch. "Let me be clear: Anyone who assaults, impedes, obstructs, or threatens the lives of federal officers will be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."
The Ontario Police Department confirmed Thursday that it also responded to the incident to provide traffic control and security while federal officers conducted an investigation. Homeland Security and the FBI are investigating the shooting.
Thursday's shooting in San Bernardino County comes after another shooting incident involving federal immigration officers was reported last week in Los Angeles County.
