NEW LENOX, IL — An employee at a New Lenox AT&T store was taken into a back room and hit over the head with a handgun in an attempted armed robbery Monday evening, New Lenox police said.

Police were called just after 5:30 p.m. to the store at 701 E. Lincoln Highway, for an armed robbery complaint.

The employee told police that two men wearing masks, gloves and construction clothing had come into the store and flashed a handgun, before demanding that the employee open the safe.

The men took the employee to the back room of the store, where they struck the employee over the head with the gun, according to police reports.

The safe had several security measures in place preventing it from being opened, police said. The suspects became frustrated and fled the store, according to reports.

Nothing was reported stolen, and the employee refused medical treatment, police said.
