A California man who lost his pregnant wife in 2020 when she was fatally struck by a drunk driver had a terrifying scare involving his current pregnant girlfriend.
It has been a harrowing few days for James Alvarez, and a reminder of a terrible tragedy.
Five years ago, Alvarez's pregnant wife was hit by a car. Their baby survived, but she did not.
Then, this past week, his current girlfriend, who is also pregnant, was involved in a car crash.
"When she told me that she was pregnant, it was the biggest blessing ever, you know. I never thought that I would have another kid," Alvarez said.
For Alvarez and Sabrina Ramos, it's an exciting time as they're expecting a baby together.
But, Alvarez says what happened last Friday night was nothing short of terrifying.
The couple was headed home from dinner in separate cars on the 14 Freeway in the Sylmar area when his girlfriend was rear-ended by another driver.
"We were both on speaker phone, and then all of a sudden, I hear an impact," he said. "And then I hear her say, 'Oh my gosh, I just got hit.' And I'm like, 'What?' And then boom, that's when I hear my car get hit."
"The person hit her so hard, that pushed her into me," he continued.
Alvarez's first thoughts were obviously with his girlfriend and their unborn baby.
He said as he watched her be taken away in an ambulance, his mind went to a very dark place because he's been down this road before.
"Literally, I was stuck in the same situation of seeing my girlfriend being taken away, and I couldn't be with her, and not knowing if the baby is OK, is she OK?" Alvarez said.
Back in August of 2020, he and his then-wife, Yesenia Aguilar, who was also pregnant, were walking along a sidewalk in Anaheim when a driver jumped the curb and plowed into her, narrowly missing Alvarez.
Aguilar was 35 weeks pregnant at the time of the collision. The couple's daughter, Adalyn Rose, was born by emergency C-section, but Aguilar was killed.
"For me, it was just like, I don't want to go through this pain again, and lose someone who means a lot to me," Alvarez said.
This time, though, he can breathe a sigh of relief because everyone is going to be OK.
"They did an ultrasound. They checked her back. The baby is perfectly fine, still healthy and kicking. My girlfriend, too, thankfully, only has soreness and some back pain," Alvarez said.
He posted about the crash on social media and says he has gotten quite a response.
"Everyone who's been praying for us, I want to say thank you," he said.
Alvarez said he's blessed to have found love and become a father again, adding that little Adalyn can't wait to be a big sister.
In the meantime, Friday's crash remains under investigation.
