GURNEE, IL — Two people who'd previously been deported for felony offenses and accused of leading federal agents on a chase in Lake County Thursday morning were taken into custody inside a high school, police in Gurnee said.
The duo was wanted by federal authorities, federal authorities told Gurnee Police, and their pursuit began outside of Gurnee. Several crashes happened during the chase, including a crash near Grand Avenue and First Street at about 8:20 a.m., as well as others outside of Gurnee, according to a news release from the Gurnee Police Department.
In Gurnee, the fleeing vehicle lost a tire, leading to the detached tire striking a vehicle that was headed east on Grand Avenue, according to a news release from Gurnee police. The fleeing vehicle continued west on Grand Avenue before turning onto O'Plaine Road and ending up near the entrance to Warren Township High School's O'Plaine Campus, according to police.
The driver and passenger fled the car and ran toward the high school. One entered the high school, where they were detained by federal agents, and the other was detained outside the high school.
The Gurnee Police Department did not take part in the arrests and the police department's school resource officer was on the property of the high school where he "worked closely with school administration to secure the campus and ensure the safety of students, staff, and visitors," according to police.
"The situation was resolved quickly, and a lockdown was not required. The Gurnee Police Department understands that developing situations of this nature can be alarming to students, staff, and parents," police said in a news release. "Fortunately, no injuries were reported for anyone on campus or to motorists in the area."
The agents at the scene of the incident were from Border Patrol, police told Patch Thursday. Local authorities could not comment further on the incident and referred all additional questions to federal authorities.
