LONG ISLAND, NY — A Farmingville man has been indicted in connection with having an unserialized loaded handgun with an extended magazine, and leading police on a high-speed chase that resulted injuries to three officers, District Attorney Ray Tierney said.
Kyri Law, 18, has been charged with one count each of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and assault, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, and third-degree criminal mischief, all felonies, as well as unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle and reckless driving, both misdemeanors, according to Tierney's office.
Law faces 15 years in prison if convicted of the top count.
He was ordered held on $25,000 cash, $50,000 bond, or $500,000 partially secured bond during the pendency of the case.
His defense attorney, John LoTurco of Huntington, described him as a "gentleman" who has no prior arrests.
"As an 18-year-old, he is youthful offender eligible," he told Patch. "Kyri comes from an outstanding family lineage, including numerous law enforcement members. His family prays for a full recovery to any injured police officer."
At the time of the arrest, Law was on his way to work, LoTurco said, adding that his client is a recent high school graduate with "a promising future."
"His family is dismayed at the charges, but we will carefully scrutinize the evidence to determine our strategy going forward," he said. "Our objective is to obtain the fairest outcome, based upon our client's age, background, and the evidence."
Tierney said Law's case "is yet another reminder of the dangerous situations our law enforcement officers face every day."
"We are grateful for their courage as they work diligently to keep us safe," he added.
In August, members of the DA's Gang Task Force, in partnership with detectives from the police department's Gun Crime Reduction Unit launched an investigation into Law for allegedly displaying an illegal firearm on social media, according to prosecutors.
On Aug. 28, when investigators arrived at Law's Farmingville apartment complex to execute a search warrant for the illegal firearm, and Law left his house through the front door and got into his mother's 2022 Alfa Romeo before investigators approached the door, prosecutors said.
Law sped away from the apartment complex and rammed a police vehicle, hurting an officer, and then led additional officers on an 8-mile high-speed chase through Suffolk, from Farmingville to Oakdale, during which two more officers were hurt when their vehicle crashed, according to prosecutors.
During the chase, Law threw a black bag containing an illegal, loaded 9mm unserialized gun with an extended magazine out of the vehicle's window, which was later found after a lengthy search by members of law enforcement, prosecutors said.
He is due back in court on Oct. 23.
