An off-duty Broadview police officer shot a man who approached him with a knife in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood, Chicago police said.

The shooting took place at about 9:02 p.m. in the 7300-block of South Langley Avenue.

Police said the 64-year-old off-duty officer was in an alley getting out of his vehicle when he was approached by a man with a knife.

The off-duty officer fired his gun at the suspect, hitting him in the legs, police said.

The suspect fled but was later taken into custody and transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition, police said.

The off-duty officer was transported to a hospital for observation. A knife was recovered from the scene, police said.

The CPD Investigative Response Team Detectives is investigating the circumstances of the incident and charges are pending.

Broadview police issued a statement saying, "At approximately 8:02 p.m. on Wednesday, September 17, off-duty Village of Broadview Police Detective Anthony Beattie was entering his garage, located in the City of Chicago, when a male intruder also entered the detective's garage. A struggle ensued and the intruder withdrew a knife at which time the detective withdrew his firearm and shot the intruder in the leg and arm. The offender fled the garage and was apprehended, still in possession of the knife, by Chicago Police approximately a half block away in an empty lot. The offender is in stable condition. Detective Beattie was transported to University of Chicago Hospital for observation and later released. Detective Beattie, a 9-month veteran of the BPD, has been assigned to administrative duties for 30-days, per BPD policy, while the Chicago Police Department investigates the shooting as the incident occurred in their jurisdiction and our officer was off duty."

The shooting comes as police are also investigating a separate shooting involving a Chicago officer shooting a suspect on the West Side.
