Yurem Mejia-Gomez, of Round Lake Beach, charged in 19-year-old's Ingleside shooting death in 35700-block of North Wilson Road

A suspect has been charged with fatally shooting a man at a north suburban birthday party on Friday night, the Lake County Sheriff's Office said.

The sheriff's office said the shooting happened around 11:15 p.m. in the driveway of an Ingleside home in the 35700-block of North Wilson Road.

A 19-year-old man was attending a party at the home when a group arrived and started arguing with partygoers, the sheriff's office said. The group left, but after getting into their vehicles, they drove by the home and fired shots, striking the 19-year-old in the upper body.

Sheriff's deputies and paramedics tried to save the victim, a Round Lake resident, but he was pronounced dead on the scene. His identity has not yet been released.

The argumentative group fled the scene, but detectives later found the vehicle used in the shooting parked at 18-year-old Yurem Mejia-Gomez's Round Lake Beach home in the 300-block of Meadow Green Lane.

Detectives also learned that the gun used in the shooting could be at a Round Lake Beach home, the sheriff's office said. Investigators did not find a gun while searching the home, but an explosive detection K-9 named Zack alerted them to a car parked out front. Police recovered the gun believed to have been used in the shooting, along with ammunition, from that car.

Mejia-Gomez, who investigators believe was the shooter, is charged with two counts of First-Degree Murder and one count of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm. He is due in court on Sunday morning.
