A woman was shot and injured in Brooklyn and a man, believed to be her downstairs neighbor, is on the run from police.
It happened on Saint John's Place in Prospect Heights around 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday.
The 49-year-old woman was shot in a violent encounter that appears to be the culmination of an ongoing neighbor dispute.
The suspect apparently lives one floor beneath the victim.
Police initially thought he was barricaded in his apartment following the shooting, but when they made entry, he was not there.
The gunman is described as about 5'10" tall, 155 pounds, wearing a navy blue shirt and navy blue pants.
The woman has been complaining to the building's super about being harassed by the man, other neighbors told Eyewitness News.
The downstairs neighbor confronted the woman in the hallway Tuesday morning, and struck her repeatedly with the butt of a gun.
When the superintendent rushed to her aid, he allegedly threatened him with the gun.
The suspect then allegedly shot the woman in the arm and leg. She was rushed to New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in stable condition.
"There was just a bunch of yelling and screaming at the beginning, two or three seconds, then a gunshot, and then I wasn't even sure if it was a gunshot it was not that loud, a bunch of more screaming. And then I poked my head out, and I heard the super say there was a gun go inside, so I went inside. I dressed myself, and then I went outside immediately on the street," a witness said.
It is believed the gunman may have escaped down a back fire escape.
