University of California reaches $6.45 million settlement over UCLA antisemitism lawsuit

The University of California reached a $6.45 million settlement with a group of Jewish students who alleged in a lawsuit that they were blocked from parts of the UCLA campus by pro-Palestinian protesters last spring.UCLA law student Yitzchok Frankel, two other Jewish students, and a professor have alleged discrimination because of their faith and argued that UCLA failed to ensure their protection. The lawsuit was first filed in June 2024. In August, a federal judge first ruled against the university in a temporary injunction. The Justice Department issued a statement in support of the plaintiffs in the case in March. In resolving claims in the case, the UC agreed to issue $320,000 to UCLA’s Initiative to Combat Antisemitism. | RELATED | See the terms of the settlement here. The system will also work to combat antisemitism on campus with $2.33 million in charitable contributions to Hillel at UCLA, the Academic Engagement Network, the Anti-Defamation League, the Jewish Federation Los Angeles’ Campus Impact Network, Chabad of UCLA, a film collaborative, the Jewish Graduate Organization and the Orthodox Union. Each plaintiff will be paid $50,000. Attorneys will be paid $3.6 million. “We are pleased with the terms of today’s settlement.
