Tyshawn T. Harris facing attempted murder, other charges after shooting at Will County sheriff's deputy in Joliet Twp.: sheriff

A 20-year-old man was arrested and charged Wednesday, after firing shots at a Will County sheriff's deputy, the sheriff's office said.

The deputy spotted a black Infiniti sedan without a license plate driving over the speed limit about 12:35 a.m. near McDonough Street and Ottawa Street in Joliet Township, the sheriff's office said.

The deputy tried to pull the car over, but it continued speeding away, police said.

Near the intersection of Chicago Street and Doris Avenue, the driver got out of the car armed with an AR-15-style pistol and shot at at the deputy, police said.

The deputy was not injured.

The suspect then ran into a field.

Joliet police and Illinois State Police helped during a brief search for the suspect, who was found and taken into custody.

A gun was also recovered, police said.

The vehicle he had been driving was stolen from Joliet, police said.

Tyshawn T. Harris, 20, has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, aggravated discharge of a firearm at a peace officer, possession of a stolen vehicle, aggravated fleeing, driving on a suspended license and other motor-vehicle-related offenses in connection with the incident, police said.

"We are thankful that our deputy is safe and that this dangerous individual is now in custody. I want to express my sincere appreciation to the Joliet Police Department and the Illinois State Police for their swift response and teamwork during this critical situation," Will County Sheriff Mike Kelley said.
