A trial is set to begin Monday for a former Waukegan police officer who is charged with second degree murder.
Investigators say in October of 2020, Dante Salinas shot and killed 19-year old Marcellis Stinnette and injured his girlfriend Tafarra Williams after trying to stop the couple's car.
In the 2020 incident, what Waukegan police said started as a traffic stop investigating a suspicious vehicle quickly escalated to a police chase and then a shooting, which was heard on a police dash camera video.
Prosecutors said Salinas fired seven shots, killing Stinnette and injuring Williams.
Salinas is also charged with aggravated battery for a separate incident in 2019, while arresting a man at a family baptism.
