An NYPD sergeant and an 18-year-old suspect are both in the hospital after police say an armed robbery ended in a shooting in the Bronx.
Police say the suspect was robbing his own mother and brother when NYPD officers arrived.
It all started to unfold just before 10:30 p.m. Thursday at an apartment building on Gun Hill Road.
Police say 18-year-old Antonio Morales fled an apartment after robbing his mother and brother at gunpoint.
When his father and responding officers knocked on the apartment door, they said Morales acted like he was someone else, but his father recognized his voice.
As police were establishing a perimeter, they say Morales fired three shots out of a window and tried to storm out past officers in the hallway.
In the process, one NYPD officer was injured when he fell back and hit his head in the scuffle.
The suspect was shot twice, in the lower back and his right arm, by another officer on the scene.
"The officer who sustained a serious head injury was immediately rushed to Jacobi Medical Center, thankfully he is currently in stable condition," NYPD officials said at a press conference. "The perpetrator was also brought to Jacobi Medical Center and is in critical condition as well. This incident is being investigated by our force investigation unit."
Police say they recovered a loaded firearm from Morales' backpack.
It is believed to be the gun he used to rob his mother and brother and fire shots out of the window, police say.
Authorities say the entire incident was captured on bodycam video and it is all still under investigation.
