ENFIELD, CT — A 17-year-old driver was seriously injured early Thursday after police said he fled from an attempted traffic stop and later crashed into a tree in Enfield.
The information was released in an email from Enfield Police Chief Alaric Fox.
Police said an officer spotted a maroon Nissan Maxima traveling on Hazard Avenue around 12:48 a.m. without its headlights or taillights on. When the vehicle turned onto Freshwater Boulevard, the officer activated emergency lights in an attempt to stop it.
According to police, the driver turned into a CVS parking lot, sped around the building, and then drove back onto Freshwater Boulevard in an effort to get away. The officer did not pursue the vehicle as it continued south at a high rate of speed.

The teen driver was the only person in the car. He was removed from the vehicle and taken to Baystate Hospital with serious injuries, police said.
Chief Fox said charges are pending, and the crash remains under investigation.
