A man who is on trial in connection with a shooting at a park in Davis on Picnic Day in April is now facing federal charges, according to the United States Department of Justice.A release from the DOJ said a criminal complaint was unsealed on Friday charging 19-year-old Joseph Allen Davis with being a felon in possession of a fireman. (Video player above: 19-year-old accused in Davis Picnic Day shooting pleads not guilty)Two teenagers and a 24-year-old were injured in the shooting at a Community Park event on April 12, the same day as UC Davis' annual Picnic Day gathering which brings thousands to the area. While the shooting was on Picnic Day, the event where the shooting took place was not affiliated with the university, but was put on by a campus fraternity. According to the Davis Police Department, Davis was arrested in Sacramento County on May 23 after a search warrant was issued for his apartment, where an illegal assault rifle was found.The DOJ said on Friday that Davis is prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition because he has already been convicted of felony gun possession in the past. Davis also faces felony gun charges from the Yolo County District Attorney's Office. He pleaded not guilty to the charges against him on May 28. A spokesperson with the DOJ said the federal charges are separate from the Yolo County DA's charges. Davis faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted of the federal charges. Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin Lee is prosecuting the case.
