A 21-year-old man is in custody after a carjacking in West Philadelphia led to a police chase and the theft of a patrol vehicle Friday night, authorities said.
The carjacking happened just after 6:30 p.m. near Race and Robinson streets.
Police say the woman driving the vehicle was able to get out safely as the suspect took off.
The car was equipped with OnStar, a tracking system that allowed officers to locate it and pursue the suspect.
The chase ended when the suspect crashed at Frankford and Adams avenues.
He fled on foot, but during the pursuit, police say he doubled back, jumped into a police cruiser, and drove off.

The suspect stopped the stolen cruiser in a driveway on the 900 block of Arrott Street, police say, where he abandoned the vehicle and ran behind nearby homes.
He was taken into custody shortly afterward.
Police have not released the suspect's name.
The woman who was carjacked was not hurt.
