Surveillance footage captured the moments after Coast Guard personnel shot at a U-Haul truck driver who was speeding toward them in reverse during a protest in the Bay Area last week.People had been protesting in front of the Coast Guard base all day, opposing the expected arrival of hundreds of immigration officers in the Bay Area. The shots were fired around 10 p.m. Thursday at the base in Alameda, the Coast Guard posted on X. The vehicle drove away, and no Coast Guard personnel were hurt, the statement said. The barrage of gunfire lasted about four seconds and was recorded by a surveillance camera about a block east of the Coast Guard Island bridge. About a minute after the shooting, the truck went down Dennison Street, and law enforcement was not following the truck. The driver then made a U-turn before parking on that same street.About three minutes after the shooting, a dark-colored car is seen pulling up next to the driver's side of the U-Haul. Someone steps out of the car and appears to help the U-Haul driver into the back seat of the car before driving away. At this point, it is unknown if the people in the car knew the driver or if they drove that driver to a hospital.A few minutes later, people walking near the U-Haul appear to make a connection between the truck and the shooting. They inspect the truck and point out all the bullet holes. The group then flags down a law enforcement officer who was driving down the street. By 10:05 p.m., a number of officers had responded to the scene. The Department of Homeland Security said the driver had a stomach wound and was later held for a mental health evaluation. As of Monday, KCRA's partners at the San Francisco Chronicle report there is no record that the driver has been arrested or charged. The reason why the man drove toward the base is still unknown.A bystander was hit by a fragment and later released from the hospital.See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app | Subscribe to our morning newsletter | Find us on YouTube here and subscribe to our channel
