Stolen BMW driver leads police on wild chase from West Deptford to Camden before getting away

Police in Gloucester County pursued a stolen car for miles early Friday morning before it got away.

Police say a BMW X3 that was stolen from a West Deptford home Tuesday morning showed up on a license plate reader as the vehicle entered Washington Township.

"Officers acted swiftly, decisively. They started to pursue the vehicle," said Washington Twp. Police Chief Patrick Gurcsik.

Police say when an officer tried to pull the vehicle over, it fled onto Rt. 42 southbound. The vehicle then looped around northbound on 42, then got onto the Atlantic City Expressway southbound.

After several miles, police say it crossed the median and headed towards Camden.

The chase ended on Carl Miller Blvd. in Camden after the BMW almost hit another car head-on.

Gurcsik says officers decided to end the pursuit for safety reasons.

Police say this BMW was stolen on Tuesday as suspects went through this West Deptford neighborhood trying to access cars , as captured on surveillance video.

West Deptford police did make an arrest Wednesday overnight in the area of Crescent Ave. after a vehicle burglary in progress was reported. It's unclear if that suspect is connected with the vehicle thefts on Tuesday.

South Jersey has seen an uptick in vehicle thefts over the past several years, something that's been a constant battle for local police departments.

"They use stolen cars to commit other crimes, sometimes more serious crimes, violent crimes, robberies, home invasions," said Gurcsik.

Multiple other agencies assisted in the chase, including New Jersey State Police and Camden County.
