The Stockton Police Department on Wednesday released its monthly crime statistics for November, which left some wondering if there were unreported homicides. There was one homicide listed for November, according to the agency, and some on social media asked why the four people killed in the Nov. 29 mass shooting were not included. It boils down to a technicality. The shooting during a 2-year-old's birthday party at Lucile Avenue and Thornton Road was just outside of city limits in unincorporated Stockton, which is under the jurisdiction of the San Joaquin County sheriff. That also explains why the sheriff's office is the lead investigator for the shooting and not the police department, even if the attack is being commonly referred to as the Stockton mass shooting. All crimes that happen within city limits are under the jurisdiction of Stockton police, so any crimes that happen in San Joaquin County, even in unincorporated areas, would not be counted for the police department's crime statistics. As of Dec. 17, there have been 36 homicides within city limits. That's compared to 54 homicides in 2024.The November homicide was a stabbing along Venetian Drive that left a woman dead.See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app | Subscribe to our morning newsletter | Find us on YouTube here and subscribe to our channel
