
More than two weeks after a mass shooting in Stockton left four people dead and 13 others injured, the community continues to grieve and search for answers. But amid the pain, residents are finding ways to support one another.At the California College of Barbering and Cosmetology, the steady hum of clippers and the buzz of razors signaled more than business as usual. The school hosted a fundraiser, donating proceeds to the families of those who were killed.“Stockton is something that we’re very proud of, so we wanted to make sure we could give something to the families that are hurting right now,” said Mayra Tavares, the school’s director of operations.Tavares said the event was also a response to calls for the city to stand together in the wake of the tragedy.“We need to become better,” she said. “We have an opportunity to show our community that and this shows that.”Throughout the day, people filed in to get haircuts and contribute, turning routine appointments into a 'cut for a cause.'“These families need support,” said Linda Contreras, who came to donate. “This is a tragedy that hit our hometown and I cry just thinking about it.”| MORE | Father of Stockton child killed in birthday shooting shares his anguish, as vice mayor calls for reformContreras said she has reflected on the shooting since it happened, imagining what the families are enduring. “I have four children, I have four grandchildren, and nieces and nephews,” she said. “I can’t even imagine what these families are going through.” The day included prayer for the victims and their loved ones. “Even in tragedy we can choose unity, empathy, and hope,” a speaker said. “May we honor those affected… by caring for one another today and always.”Organizers said the salon is also accepting cash donations to be given directly to the families of those who were killed.
