Shooting suspect fires at officers in Manteca pursuit before rollover crash, police say

A man suspected in multiple shootings was taken into custody in Manteca Tuesday after a dangerous pursuit in which he fired a gun at officers before hitting a bystander's vehicle, veering off the road and violently crashing, according to the police department.Officials said the pursuit began just before 7 p.m. when officers spotted the suspect's vehicle in the Jack-in-the-Box parking lot at the intersection of Main Street and Louise Avenue.Manteca police said officers conducted a "high risk stop" and attempted to block the suspect from leaving, but he was able to drive away. Officers then initiated a pursuit.Officials said while on Union Road between Lovelace and French Camp roads, the suspect fired a weapon multiple times at the pursuing officers. No officers fired their weapons, officials said.The suspect then turned westbound on French Camp Road and collided with another, uninvolved vehicle at the intersection of French Camp and Dudley roads, the police department said. The suspect's vehicle then went off the roadway into a field, rolling over several times.Following the crash, officials said the suspect refused to exit the car for about 20 minutes, but eventually he got out and was taken into custody. A firearm was found in his car.The police department said the suspect complained of pain and was taken to an area hospital for medical clearance. Officials have not identified the suspect, but said he is a 26-year-old man from the Antioch area. His vehicle was believed to be connected to four shootings at the same residence on Monday and Tuesday.
