San Jose triple murder: 1 man, 2 women killed in shooting along Chynoweth Avenue; search for suspect underway, police say

Police are investigating the deaths of three people in apparent shooting in San Jose on Tuesday.

SJPD received calls about gun shots and and a woman screaming for help just before 12:30 a.m. on 200 block of Chynoweth Avenue.

Neighbors described the chilling wake-up call.

"We hear these sounds, 'bang, bang, bang' and my husband said it was not a firework, it was a really bad gun," Khadija Mathews said. "We looked out of the window and we didn't see anything and the next thing you know, we heard screaming."

"We heard somebody pretty loudly yelling, 'I'm bleeding, I'm bleeding. Help me, help me'," Jeff Davis said.

Police found a woman shot outside of the home. She was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, but later died, SJPD said.

At a press conference on Tuesday, officials are investigating how the woman got outside.

Police found two other victims inside the home, a man and another woman, also shot. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man was also taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, but also succumbed to his injuries.

No arrests have been made.

"The suspect is currently unidentified and outstanding," SJPD Sr. Public Information Representative Stacie Shih said. "Although, we do want to make it clear that this was an isolated incident, so there's no threat to public safety at this time. Our homicide detectives are actively investigating and diligently working around the clock to make sure that they identify, apprehend and arrest the suspect responsible for this homicide."

The SJPD Homicide Unit was investigating for much of the day Tuesday, flying drones and going door-to-door.

The unit has a perfect solve rate for more than 3 years and there's hope a suspect will be arrested in this tragic case.

"It's been said time and again the our homicide unit has been outstanding in terms of our homicide solve rate," Shih said. "That said, it's not a number to us. Our detectives work around the clock because they want to bring justice to the victims and they want to bring justice to the victim's families. We want to make sure that the suspects are always held responsible for the heinous crimes they commit."

While neighbors appreciate the work and understand police say they are not at risk, their minds are not necessarily at ease after the deadly night in their community.

"After today, I'm really on the edge right now because I don't know who's bringing guns and shooting guns in our area," Mathews said. "We have small kids that run around, so we're just on the edge."

"It's super surprising," Davis said. "This is a big family neighborhood for sure. You get the odd stuff here and there, but nothing like this."

The identity of the victims will be released by the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner, police said.

This is San Jose's 19th, 20th and 21st homicides of the year.
