San Bernardino County deputy shot, killed while responding to armed man making threats

A Southern California deputy was killed in the line of duty on Monday while responding to the report of an armed man who was making threats, according to the San Bernardino Sheriff's Office.Around 12:37 p.m., deputies responded to a residence on Hollyhock Drive in Rancho Cucamonga. When deputies arrived, officials said they were immediately fired upon by the suspect.The sheriff's office said one of its deputies, 28-year-old Andrew Nunez, was struck by the gunfire. He was airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.The suspect then led deputies on a vehicle pursuit, getting onto eastbound Interstate 210, officials said. The suspect reached speeds of more than 150 miles per hour.The sheriff's office said a deputy then used a pursuit intervention technique to collide with the suspect on I-210 at Campus Avenue. The suspect was then taken to an area hospital, and officials have not shared the extent of his injuries, but said he was in "stable" condition. The sheriff's office said the suspect, who has not yet been identified, will be booked into jail for murder after he is cleared by medical personnel. "Deputy Nunez served with unwavering commitment, courage, and deep compassion for the community he vowed to protect," the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office shared on social media. "His bravery and sacrifice reflect a life dedicated to safeguarding others, even at the greatest cost. Such devotion will remain forever etched in our hearts."Gov. Gavin Newsom said Nunez was a six-year veteran of the department. He said he was survived by his wife, 2-year-old daughter, unborn child, his mother and four siblings."On behalf of all Californians, Jennifer and I extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Deputy Nunez. His courage, compassion and dedication to protecting others reflect the finest traditions of law enforcement.
