A driver has been charged in connection with a hit-and-run that killed a pregnant mother in the north suburbs on Sunday night, police said on Tuesday.
Michelle Heidbrick, 36, was hit and killed while crossing the street near Grand Avenue and Jackson Street in Waukegan around 9:30 p.m. Sunday.
Heidbrick was taken to Vista Medical Center East, where she was pronounced dead. Her pregnancy was at the 22-week mark, and she leaves behind a teenage son.
A witness told police that the driver fled the scene without stopping.
Rosalinda Vaca, a 49-year-old Waukegan woman, has been charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident.
Police said Vaca told them she was driving a black SUV when she hit something in the roadway, but did not realized what it was.
Vaca learned about a report of the fatal crash, realized she was involved, and surrendered to police.
Vaca is being held ahead of her first court appearance.
Police also said officers located the SUV she was driving are holding it for the ongoing investigation.
