Police shot and wounded a Bronx teen after officials say he robbed his relatives at gunpoint Thursday night, barricaded himself in an apartment and injured an NYPD officer while trying to escape.
Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera said the incident unfolded around 9:15 p.m., when officers from the 49th Precinct responded to a 911 call from the 18-year-old’s father, who said the teen had a gun and had stolen items from his mother and older brother at a home in Van Nest. The father said his son had fled to a different address on East Gun Hill Road near Paulding Avenue in Williamsbridge, according to Rivera.
Police and the father went to that building, and officers established a perimeter, Rivera said. The chief said they knocked on the door and heard the 18-year-old’s voice saying he wasn’t the person they were looking for, but the father recognized it was his son. Officers tried to keep him inside with the door closed while they waited for the NYPD’s Emergency Services Unit to arrive, according to Rivera.
Shortly thereafter, the group heard three gunshots from inside the apartment, and the teen opened the door and rushed out, Rivera said. He added that the 18-year-old ran into officers positioned outside the building’s front door, and a struggle ensued as they tried to take him into custody.
Rivera said one of the officers fell backward and hit his head, resulting in a serious injury. Another officer fired her gun at the teen, who was struck in his lower back and right arm, the chief said.
The 18-year-old and the officer who fell were rushed to Jacobi Hospital, where the teen was in critical condition and the officer was expected to recover, Rivera said. Police recovered a loaded gun from a bag the teen was carrying, he noted.
This is the weapon that was recovered at the scene.
