Police fatally shoot man outside John Marshall Elementary School in Anaheim, triggering temporary lockdown
Anaheim police fatally shot a man early Monday afternoon outside of an elementary school, triggering a temporary lockdown.
According to Anaheim police, an officer responded to the intersection of Holly Street and Falmouth Avenue around 12:45 p.m. in response to a call about a suspicious person. The caller said a man in the area was acting suspiciously and possibly under the influence of drugs, carrying a brick and a shovel.
When the officer arrived and encountered the man, the officer fired shots, hitting the suspect, according to the police department. The officer rendered first aid, and the man was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead approximately 30 minutes later.
The police department said the officer was not hurt, and a shovel was recovered at the scene.
The shooting happened outside of John Marshall Elementary School, sparking a temporary lockdown. Police said class was in session, but none of the students were exposed to the shooting.
The Anaheim Elementary School District released the following statement:
"Earlier today, there was a police incident near Marshall Elementary. Out of an abundance of caution, our school immediately initiated a lockdown. At no point was there a direct threat to our students or staff. We are in constant communication with the Anaheim Police Department and are following all established safety procedures to ensure the well-being of our school community."
Police said the identity of the man who died is unknown, pending confirmation by the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner's office. He's described as an approximately 30-year-old man.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
