A Bronx man was found shot to death in a stairwell at a public housing building in the borough Sunday night, breaking what police say was a record streak of no reported homicides in the city.

NYPD officers responding to a 911 call just after 9 p.m. found 38-year old Gregory Stewart with a gunshot wound to his head at NYCHA’s Sotomayor Houses on Watson Avenue in Soundview, officials said. Stewart lived in Wakefield, more than four miles away, according to police.

Emergency medical workers transported him to Jacobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police said they took a person into custody but haven’t announced any charges yet as the investigation continues.

Officials said up until Stewart was killed the city had gone 12 days without a homicide, tying a record for the longest stretch without a homicide, last set in 2015. This year, the city also reported its least shootings on record for the first 11 months of the year, officials added.
