Pembroke Man Arrested On Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated, Other Charges After Crash In Concord

CONCORD, NH — A man from Pembroke was arrested on multiple charges Tuesday morning after being accused of aggravated drunken driving after a crash on North State Street, according to Concord police.

Just before 5 a.m., police and fire and rescue teams were sent to the area of the New Hampshire State Prison for Men after 911 received several calls about a crash. Witnesses stated a car was parked on the side of the road with its engine smoking.

Fire dispatch told Concord dispatch there was at least one person inside the car who was unconscious.

The first arriving officers shut down the road and began detouring traffic around the crash scene.

Firefighters reported "heavy damage" to the car, but the driver was not trapped inside.

When calling in the plate on the car, an officer said, "I can't really tell the make and model of it right now" because of the vehicle's damage. The driver's identity was also unknown, as he was taken to Concord Hospital.

Drivers for the Concord School District, according to alerts, had difficulty reaching their school buses due to the crash and the ensuing investigation. Parents were notified of delays of 20 to 25 minutes in student pickup due to the crash.

Later, police arrested the driver, Ryan Swain, 20, of Pembroke, on felony aggravated driving while intoxicated and acts prohibited-misdemeanor charges. He was also cited for moving a vehicle and possession and use of tobacco products, e-cigarettes, or e-liquid to a persons who have not attained 21 years of age-prohibited violations.

Swain is scheduled to be arraigned in Concord District Court on Dec. 15.

Concord police did not have a booking photo available and declined to release Swain's hospital photo due to the severity of his injuries.
