Off-duty NYPD officer fatally shoots man carrying firearm in Washington Heights

An off-duty police officer fatally shot an armed 30-year-old suspect riding a moped in Washington Heights Sunday.

Police say two men, both riding mopeds, approached the off-duty officer just before 9:45 p.m. Sunday and asked if they knew a certain person's name.

One pulled a weapon and the off-duty officer "drew his firearm, discharged multiple rounds," according to Deputy Chief Eric Pagan, an executive officer of the Patrol Borough of Manhattan North.

The 30-year-old man was pronounced dead at Harlem Hospital. The second suspect fled on a moped and is being sought.

This marks the second fatal shooting involving an off-duty officer in three days. A 44-year-old man was fatally shot by an off-duty officer Friday night on Staten Island.
