NYPD officials said officers fired at a suspect on 96th Street at around 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Police received 911 calls at around 7 p.m. reporting an armed man near 107th Street and Madison Avenue, officials said.
Roughly 20 minutes later, police confronted the suspect near 96th Street and Madison Avenue and fired their service weapons, according to the NYPD. The man, who has not been identified, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.
Police said a firearm was recovered at the scene and urged New Yorkers to avoid the area.
Officials were expected to brief reporters with more details Thursday night but had not set a time as of 9 p.m.
