More than a dozen alleged gang members have been arrested, and charged in a string of horrific shootings in Harlem and Upper Manhattan, one of which, prosecutors say, claimed the life of an innocent 16-year-old girl.
"There are 13 defendants, two adolescent offenders (AO) under our law," Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said.
Dandre Murray and Zakaria Camara are two alleged members of a gang, who according to the Manhattan DA's office, were so intent with taking out rivals they would start shooting anytime and anyplace in Harlem.
"This alleged conduct is in a word, unacceptable. This brazen violence occurred in the middle of our streets, putting countless innocent bystanders at risk," Bragg said.
Murray and Camara were in court Wednesday afternoon, arraigned on an 66-count indictment that is 47 pages long, for conspiracy, attempted murder, assault and weapons charges.
Thirteen suspects have been accused in 10 shootings from February 2021 to July of this year.
"It's the concerted action. It is the working together and with the stated purpose, we allege, of working against another group," Bragg said.
In July 2024, near West 148th Street and Bradhurst Avenue in Hamilton Heights, prosecutors say members walked up to Tresaun Clements, yelling and demanding to know who he was and where he was from.
"They approached him to rob him, surrounded him, punched him. He was in a coma and later died several weeks later."
Back in January, prosecutors say the gang members smuggled scapples into the courthouse and slashed rival gang members on the 13th floor, the same floor where Murray and Camara were arraigned on Wednesday.
"The violence, even came to this very location with defendants coming inside our courts and slashing, we allege, two rivals right here at 100 Center Street," Bragg said.
Only Murray and Camara were arraigned on Wednesday. The other suspects are expected to be arraigned on Thursday. One suspect has yet to be arrested.
