
A man accused of killing his estranged wife and another man in Elk Grove on Monday has died, the police department said. According to Elk Grove police, 39-year-old Michael Diego died on Thursday afternoon in an area hospital. Investigators believe he died from a drug overdose.(Watch previous coverage in the video player above.)Diego is believed to be responsible for the two shooting deaths of his estranged wife, who has not yet been identified by the coroner, and 38-year-old Miguels Samuel Rodriguez. The shooting happened at a residence at Eva Avenue and Adams Street before 11 a.m. Monday. Officials said Diego drove away from the scene of the crime in his own vehicle, but abandoned it near Calvine and Excelsior roads. Investigators learned that another person, who was unaware of what Diego had done, drove him to the area of Cosumnes River Boulevard and Bruceville Road.Around 3:21 p.m. that same day, Elk Grove police said fire personnel responded to a report of an unresponsive man in a ditch around the same area where Diego was dropped off. The man was unconscious and unresponsive, with no signs of trauma. He was taken to a local hospital.Officers intended to take him into custody when he was medically cleared.
