Man shot and killed by Lemoore police officer after attacking officer with knife, chief says

A man has died after a Lemoore police officer opened fire during an attack in a Lemoore apartment.

Lemoore Police Chief Michael Kendall says the incident started at 1 p.m. Tuesday on Blake Street, near 18th Avenue and Hanford Armona Road.

He says the officer responded to a call for "some type of assault that took place about five years ago in Reno."

The officer started to talk with the man, who invited the officer inside to interview him about the prior assault.

Chief Kendall says once inside, the suspect grabbed a knife and tried to attack the officer.

The officer would fire his pistol and shoot the suspect.

Medical treatment was given to the man, but he would later die as a result of the gunshot wounds.

The officer was not injured. The man has not been identified.

Chief Kendall says the Kings County Sheriff's Office will be taking over the investigation.

The officer will be placed on administrative leave per the police department's policy.

This is the first officer-involved shooting in the city of Lemoore since 2019.
