Man shoots employee at recycling business in Riverside, then himself, police say

A man in his early 60s opened fire Tuesday morning at a recycling business in Riverside where he previously worked, critically injuring a female employee before fatally shooting himself, authorities said.

The incident was reported around 10:30 a.m. at a business in the 6100 block of Columbus Avenue, just north of Jurupa Avenue, according to Ryan Railsback with the Riverside Police Department.

Railsback initially said on Tuesday that the incident occurred at Pepe's Towing Service but later issued an updated press release, saying further investigation revealed the shooting took place at a recycling business on the same property.

The former employee of the the recycling business, who worked there until about a week ago, shot a woman multiple times and then shot at other employees. The woman who was hit, described as being in her early 40s, was rushed into surgery at Riverside Community Hospital in critical condition. She is expected to survive.

According to Railsback, the man then turned the gun on himself and died at the scene. He was identified as 53-year-old Ruben ZavalaNegrete of Ontario.

No other injuries were reported.

A motive for the shooting has not been determined, and it was unclear if there was any connection between the victim and the shooter beyond their shared workplace.
