An investigation is underway after a man was shot and killed during a police shooting involving two off-duty officers on Staten Island.
The deadly shooting happened just after 8 p.m. on Friday near William Avenue and Hylan Boulevard in Eltingville.
According to the NYPD, police responded to a 911 call after reports of a man with a gun behind Andrew's Diner on Hylan Boulevard. The suspect reportedly left the area of diner a short time later.
Officials say an off-duty officer walking outside on William Avenue encountered the suspect and noticed the gun. The officer then alerted another off-duty officer about the situation, and together they confronted the man.
Police say the officers repeatedly ordered the man to drop his weapon, but he did not comply and instead pointed the firearm at them. That's when one of the officers shot the suspect multiple times.
First responders transported the man to Staten Island University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police have identified the suspect as 44-year-old Jesse Campbell of Staten Island.
Authorities later recovered an imitation firearm at the scene.
Assistant Chief Melissa Eger, the commanding officer borough chief of Staten Island, described in a late Friday night presser why the officers took action.
"Our officers were confronted with a dangerous and unpredictable situation, and they attempted to de-escalate the situation multiple times," Eger said.
Campbell has seven prior arrests, including for felony, narcotics, and larceny.
