Man found dead in woods in North Bay Shore; shots fired near scene, officer hospitalized

Shots were fired near the scene of a man's body being found in North Bay Shore early Thursday, and one police officer suffered injuries.

The victim was found in the brush on the south side of New York Avenue just after 5 p.m. Wednesday by two neighbors returning home from work.

The man appears to have been killed in the street and moved into the brush.

The cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner, although it appears to be a homicide.

As the investigation was ongoing by Suffolk County police, shots rang out around 2:30 a.m. near the scene.

One police officer was injured and taken to South Shore University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, although it's not yet known if he was shot.

The search for the gunman is ongoing.

Police believe they know the identity of the victim found in the woods, which is pending family notification.
