One person is dead and another hospitalized following a police shooting at a gas station in El Monte.
The shooting happened at the Route 66 gas station near Garvey and Durfee avenues Thursday night. Police said they were responding to a domestic violence situation before gunfire broke out.
Further details about what led up to the shooting were limited, but a dark-colored sedan was seen boxed in by police vehicles at the scene. The passenger side door of that vehicle appeared to have been ripped off.
A man was pronounced dead at the scene. He has not been identified. A woman was also taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.
Residents in the area said they were alarmed to hear multiple gunshots ring out late at night.
"I heard like six or seven gunshot... and yeah, we looked on the news and saw it this close so we had to come running over here," said one resident.
The California Department of Justice is leading the investigation into the shooting. Additional information was not available.
