Police are investigating after two people, including an innocent bystander, were shot in Manhattan on Tuesday.
Officers responded to a 911 call around 2:30 p.m. for multiple people shot on East Broadway and Clinton Street on the Lower East Side, a normally busy area with a school and hospital nearby.
Upon arrival, they found a 21-year-old man shot in the right leg, and a 63-year-old woman shot in the right foot.
Eyewitness News obtained cellphone video of the 63-year-old victim, believed to be an innocent bystander, receiving medical attention.
Police say the 21-year-old man was the intended target.
Both victims were taken to Bellevue Hospital where they are expected to survive.
Frightened residents spoke to Eyewitness News after the gunfire broke out.
"I was making empanadas when I heard the gunshots and threw myself on the ground," said witness Maria Morillo. "My husband threw himself on the ground and so did the customers. Then we went outside, and I saw a woman who was injured, as well as several bullet holes. I was pretty scared."
Neighbors and workers said there was no mistaking the spray of bullets.
"Two guys met up and one had a gun. The guy on the scooter ran, saw him, and starting firing shots," one man said. "The other guy wanted to hide, and the gunshots landed in that direction. Everyone was on the ground."
A porter who had just finished cleaning for the day in one of the nearby residential buildings, was spared any blood shed.
"I actually left about 10 minutes before all this started, so it's crazy," the man said. "Probably the universe telling me to get out of here."
Police are now searching for two male suspects that fled on an e-bike.
No arrests have been made so far, and the investigation is ongoing.
