Jury trial postponed for man accused of 2023 Roseville park shooting

Eric Abril, the man accused of taking a couple hostage during a deadly shootout with police at a park in Roseville two years ago, will not stand trial until 2026.Placer County court documents show Abril's new jury trial date is March 23, when it was originally set for Oct. 20, 2025.(Previous coverage in the video player above) On April 6, 2023, Abril, 37, ran from officers and took two people hostage while being served a warrant, according to the Roseville Police Department. During that hostage situation, a gunbattle took place between Abril and law enforcement that resulted in the death of one of the hostages and the injury of an officer and the other hostage.Abril was also hurt during the shooting and was treated for his injuries before being booked into jail.While in jail, Abril had a medical issue and was hospitalized at Sutter Roseville Medical Center in July 2023. While at the hospital, Abril escaped from custody, which subsequently led to a 33-hour manhunt and eventual capture of Abril.Abril faces a number of charges including murder, kidnapping and escaping while convicted. He pleaded not guilty in February of this year, citing insanity.According to the Placer County District Attorney's Office, Abril's defense asked for continuance of a trial in September, which was granted by the judge. His next court appearance will be on Jan. 7 for a trial confirming conference.
