John Mathis case: More charges filed against man in officer-involved shooting in Bucks County, Pa.
The Bucks County District Attorney's Office has announced additional charges against a man involved in an officer-involved shooting earlier this month.
Investigators say 44-year-old John Mathis, of Levittown, pulled up to a car and pointed a gun at a driver on Aug. 2.
Officers say Mathis followed the vehicle on his motorcycle through Bensalem before police arrived and intervened.
Police opened fire when Mathis allegedly refused to drop his weapon. He was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds and has since been released.
A black 9mm pistol was recovered at the scene. Authorities later determined the firearm was not registered to Mathis.
Officials say Mathis was also wanted in connection with a gunpoint robbery at a Metro by T-Mobile store in Northeast Philadelphia less than an hour before the confrontation in Bristol Township. Police estimate that about $1,000 was stolen during that robbery.
According to the DA's office, Mathis was already facing charges in Bucks County prior to the Aug. 2 incidents, including a road rage case from July 27.
Mathis is facing a slew of charges in connection with the alleged road rage and prior robbery. The charges include robbery and theft by unlawful taking, prohibited possession of a firearm, firearms not to be carried without a license, receiving stolen property, terroristic threats, possession of a weapon, possession of an instrument of crime, simple assault, and recklessly endangering another person.
He was also charged with evading arrest or detention on foot, driving on a suspended license, reckless driving and driving an unregistered vehicle.
Mathis, who is currently in Bucks County Correctional Facility, will be arraigned on Friday.
