John Beam shooting: Cedric Irving Jr., Oakland shooting suspect in killing of 'Last Chance U' coach, makes 1st court appearance

The man accused of shooting and killing beloved Oakland football coach John Beam came face-to-face with a judge for the first time.

Cedric Irving Jr. is facing felony murder and gun charges in the shooting at Laney College last Thursday.

Members of Coach Beam's family were in court Tuesday morning,, as well as former NFL player and Oakland native Marshawn Lynch. None of them spoke to the media.

Video was not allowed in the courtroom, but still images show Irving appearing before a judge in person behind a partition.

His attorney requested to waive formal arraignment and put in a plea in on Dec. 16. No bail was set.

Beam was the Athletic Director at Laney College after coaching there and was featured in the popular Netflix show Last Chance U.

According to charging documents released Monday, Irving had a handgun when he was arrested Friday.

The documents also reveal that he admitted to shooting Beam with that gun.

Coach Beam's murder was one of two school shootings last week. There was also a shooting at Skyline High School.

That's why the DA says she is re-instituting mandatory minimum sentences as it relates to gun cases.

The DA says the mandatory minimums will be higher for ghost guns. She says she's sick to her stomach about the amount of gun violence in communities, specifically in Oakland and that it is important to start talking about security on school campuses.

The DA confirms Irving was not a student athlete but was on Laney's campus from time to time. She says he did not have a prior criminal record.

Oakland Police say the attack was targeted - but no motive has been revealed.
