Hot dog vendors injured in East Hollywood car ramming recall terrifying scene

A husband and wife are speaking out for the first time after they were seriously injured when a man crashed into a crowd of clubgoers in East Hollywood.

The crash happened over the weekend and left 37 people hurt, eight of whom suffered serious injuries -- including fractures, lacerations and broken bones, according to authorities.

The suspect - 29-year-old Fernando Ramirez from San Clemente - is now facing charges in connection with the crash and is being held without bail.

Nicolas Suarez and his wife, Maria Medrano, were selling hot dogs that night when Suarez said he saw the car hitting the crowd. He said moments later, the car hit him and his wife.

He suffered a broken leg, ankle and bruising on his left leg. He said all he remembers is being face up with the car near him, trying to get away.

Medrano said she didn't see the car coming.

She suffered arm, shoulder and rib injuries and a bump to her head. She said she still suffers from aches to her chest.

The couple said their hot dog cart - which was their livelihood - was destroyed and will cost up to $600 to replace.

Their children have set up a GoFundMe to help pay for medical expenses, physical therapy and a new hot dog cart.

"We're just happy and glad that they're ok," said the couple's daughter Sarah Suarez. "They're recovering and still with us. We have a long road ahead of us. They love what they do, and we're here to support them no matter what."

Investigators believe anger and alcohol were possible motivating factors in the ramming, according to ABC News.

Records reviewed by Eyewitness News show that in the past, Ramirez has been found guilty of battery, assault, petty theft, child abuse and endangerment.
