Two handguns were found in a pile on a Turlock middle school campus Monday, and one of the guns discharged, the police department said. Officers were called to Dutcher Middle School around 10:30 a.m. after a maintenance worker found the guns inside a pile of other material. Turlock police said the two handguns were found in a pile of blankets and a jacket near a fence line on the school's campus. That area houses electrical equipment near a neighboring apartment complex.Officials said while the worker was clearing the area, one of the firearms within the pile discharged, but no one was injured.Turlock police said it's unclear how long the handguns had been there or how they ended up there. The police department and school district are reviewing surveillance footage to establish a timeline. Officials said a Turlock police officer stayed on campus the rest of the day out of an abundance of caution. Anyone with information about the investigation is urged to contact the Turlock Police Department at 209-668-1200.See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app | Subscribe to our morning newsletter | Find us on YouTube here and subscribe to our channel
