WESTERN SPRINGS, IL – A drunk Western Springs man attacked a woman and fired a gun during a dinner party earlier this month at his house, police said.

Through a public records request, Patch obtained the police report on the arrest of Joel D. Sible, 56, who lives in the 5700 block of Lawn Drive.

Police were called to Sible's house late the night of Oct. 4.

In the bathroom, Sible was sitting on the toilet, with blood on his face and white-collared shirt, according to the police report.

A revolver was on a ledge to the right of Sible, and the responding officer could smell burnt gunpowder, police said. The gun was within Sible's reach, with the barrel pointed in an officer's direction, according to the report.

The officer pulled out his gun and ordered Sible to put his hands up and not move. Sible was said to have smirked.

The officer took Sible's revolver and handed it to another officer.

Asked about the gunpowder smell, Sible said, "It was a mistake," the report said.

As he was ordered to the ground, Sible called the officers a bunch of rookies.

Sible acknowledged that he and a 39-year-old woman got into an argument, saying he had the gun because she attacked him, police said. He said the gunshot was a misfire.

The party-goers were in the basement when they heard a loud boom upstairs, police said.

The 39-year-old woman told the others that Sible had fallen and was bleeding and asked that everyone leave, police said.

The woman told police that Sible had been drinking heavily and that she decided to go to sleep, police said. But Sible came into the bedroom, punched her repeatedly and slammed her to the floor, according to the report.

Because she was bleeding above the eye, Sible tried to push her into the shower to eliminate the evidence of the attack, police said.

The woman resisted, so Sible scratched his own face, saying he would tell police that she attacked him, police said.

Officers noticed blood on her face, neck, shoulders and hands, as well as a cut above her left eye, the report said.

Her 9-month-old boy was sleeping upstairs in a bedroom, but was unharmed, police said.

Sible was charged with felony reckless discharge of a firearm and domestic battery, police said. He was taken to the Cook County Jail at 26th and California avenues in Chicago.
