
The father of the 5-year-old boy who accidentally shot himself was held on bond during a court appearance Tuesday.Trae Colvin, 28, is charged with two counts of felony child neglect and two counts of misdemeanor child neglect.Omaha police said the child accidentally shot himself Sunday with an unsecured firearm inside a bedroom in the house.READ MORE: Omaha police arrest 28-year-old man after 5-year-old boy accidentally shoots himselfProsecutors said Colvin came home and had the gun in his pants pocket, then he and the children laid down for a nap. He awoke to the gunshot and the 5-year-old flailing his arm around, covered in blood. Colvin then stored the gun in a safe before driving the children to Council Bluffs to pick up the child's mother, then they went to the hospital, prosecutors said. She told KETV that she was working and not home at the time of the incident."When I first saw him, my heart shattered," Gutierrez said. "I could tell he was hurting, but he was trying to be a brave boy."She said she was working Sunday when her fiancé called her with the news.
