Police fatally shot a person suspected of homicide early Saturday morning following a high-speed chase that culminated outside a California In-N-Out, according to police.The suspect was wanted in connection with a fatal shooting in Carlsbad, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said on social media Saturday.Police responded on Friday evening a little before 10 p.m. to reports of gunfire in Carlsbad, where they discovered a woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, the City of Carlsbad Police Department said in a statement posted on social media early Saturday morning. The woman was later pronounced dead at the scene, police said, and her car had been stolen.Using license plate reader technology, police tracked the woman’s vehicle and around 1 a.m. Newport Beach police began pursuit on Interstate 5 to Laguna Hills, joined by an Irvine Police Department K-9 unit. The driver exited the freeway and fired a gun at officers at the intersection of El Toro Road and Avenida de la Carlota, according to the OC Sheriff’s Department.Officers returned fire, police said. Bystander video obtained by KTLA-5 in Los Angeles shows onlookers taking cover as multiple rounds of gunshots were exchanged.The suspect collapsed outside the nearby In-N-Out, the sheriff’s department said in a statement Saturday, and was later taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries. No officers were hurt during the gunfire.“At this time, investigators believe this incident was isolated, and there is no indication of an ongoing threat to the community,” the City of Carlsbad Police Department said in the Saturday statement. Neither the suspect or the homicide victim were identified by name.
