Family of man killed in Walgreen's shooting honored at 94th Annual Madera Old Timer's Day Parade

The family of Erick Velazquez was honored during the 94th annual Madera Old-timer's Parade.

The young father killed while working at a Madera Walgreens this past April when a gunman opened fire inside the store.

His family rode in on a fire truck as parade goers stood in solidarity.

"They had a tragic loss and we thought to have them in the parade on a firetruck and they're more than excited to join us," says Nick Salinas, chairman of the Old Timers Day Parade, "We're happy to have them anywhere. We can celebrate and respect and pay homage to the young gentleman. That's what we're looking to do."

The unifying moment kicked off the parade and the best of Madera was on full display down Yosemite Avenue.

"I was born and raised here in Madera. This is something that has been a tradition for our family for many years," said Madera resident Lisa Fernandez.

Four generations of Fernandez' family were all in attendance.

"This is my mother she's 93 and my granddaughter Emily. She is my son's daughter," said Fernandez.

From horses, fire trucks, cheer teams and karate groups, hundreds gathered to celebrate Madera's history, honoring tradition and the next generation.

Chris Miller is this year's Grand Marshall, a longtime business owner and Rotarian.

"I've been a life long resident born and raised here. Operated Leightons Jewelers for over 40 years myself. My father started the business," said Miller.

Madera District Attorney Salley Moreno and County Supervisor Rob Poythress were the emcee's highlighting each group that were made up of neighbors in friends.

Lisa Fernandez said, "We all come together and unite at events like this."
