Dustin R. Legat charged after Aurora shooting involving police at 4th Avenue and South State Street, near East Aurora High School
A man is facing charges after a police officer shot a vehicle near a west suburban high school while responding to a 911 call last week, officials said.
Aurora police said someone called 911 on Tuesday morning, saying a driver was following them near Jackson Street and East Benton Street and that the driver had a gun and claimed to be in law enforcement.
Officers responded just after 9:30 a.m. and found the vehicles at 4th Avenue and South State Street, near East Aurora High School. The driver referenced in the 911 call was standing outside of his vehicle, police said.
Police said during an encounter, an officer discharged their firearm once, striking the driver's vehicle. No one was hit, and no injuries have been reported.
The officer who fired their weapon was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.
Police said the driver, 48-year-old Dustin R. Legat, was taken into custody. He has no affiliation with any law enforcement agency.
Legat is facing charges of False Impersonation of a Peace Officer, Assault, Disorderly Conduct and Blue Oscillating Flashing Lights, officials confirmed on Monday.
The Aurora Police Department's Investigations Division detectives and evidence technicians are investigating.
