Ding-dong ditch shooting: 10-year-old child shot while playing door-knocking game in Houston, Texas, police say

A 10-year-old who was playing a door-knocking game was shot in Houston, according to police.

The shooting happened near the 9700-block of Mimbrough just after 11 p.m. on Saturday.

Houston police said the 10-year-old and their friends were playing "ding-dong ditch" when they arrived at the home.

Officials said at some point someone came out out of a house and opened fire, hitting the child.

HPD said the child's condition is critical after being taken to the hospital by firefighters.

The person who allegedly opened fire eventually surrendered after officers used a bullhorn and had to urge him to come out of the home with his hands up, officers said.

The person was detained by police.

Crews on scene also saw a woman and a young child in the doorway of the house, who were moved back inside.

Shortly before 6 a.m. on Sunday, officers were seen dropping the person off back at the home where the shooting had happened.

Officials did not elaborate on whether there were any other injuries.

An investigation is underway at this time.
