EAST NORRITON, PA — A member of a fire department in Montgomery County has been suspended after making racist comments on the department's social media page, stirring outrage in the community.
The Norriton Fire Engine Company, based in East Norriton, did not say what the specific comments were but noted they were "deeply disturbed" by them.
The posts were made on Facebook late in the night on Jan. 3 into the early morning of Jan. 4.
The comments have been removed and the company says the incident is under investigation, though the member's long term status with the company remains up in the air.
"Should the investigation confirm a violation of our standards, further disciplinary actions, including possible termination, will be taken in accordance with out policies," Norriton Fire Engine leadership shared in a statement.
The fire company clarified that the posts were not made by the company itself and they do not "condone or tolerate any form of racism, hate speech, or discriminatory behavior."
They added that renewed efforts would be made to keep their social media channels
